Video Excerpt from HSI Announcement
(November 10, 2005)

UCR has launched an exciting new initiative in the health sciences, aimed at serving Inland Southern California's vast and medically underserved population. While our region is first in the state for population growth, it is among the last in the number of primary care physicians per capita. As the only public research university in the area, UCR is uniquely positioned to help address this disparity. This Web site describes our response, a Health Sciences Initiative consisting of three components: a Health Sciences Research Institute, a Center for Clinical Medical Education, and a proposed School of Medicine. We expect this initiative to have a transformative effect on both our campus and the entire region. It not only will educate physicians likely to stay in our area, but it also will attract more top scholars to UCR, while creating new opportunities for our students. At the same time, it will attract new industry and bolster existing businesses, fostering collaborations between UCR and the private sector in science and technology.

I hope you will take a few minutes to read about our plan to serve the growing health needs of Inland Southern California and our state.
